2 out of 5 stars well, that explains it...   December 31, 2008

I've read many of the reviews from readers of this book and I'll have to say that I too, was left shaking my head after finishing this book. To my dismay, I found myself frequently wanting to quit before I finished the book because the hero was so annoying. I started reading the series, oh, perhaps, 2 weeks ago. So, I really followed the brothers from book one to book six within a relatively short time period. Call me obsessive...usually, if there's a series I take a shine to, I'll just keep reading it. (Admittedly, I slowed down with V's story...boy, that one was pretty bad, as well) Luckily, I'm a really fast reader. Anyway, I really took to Phury from the beginning of the series and boy, as a hero, he could not have been more disappointing. Well, maybe he could have been, but then he'd have regressed into this psychotic, whiny addict with no personality. Oh, wait, that was how he played out. So, yeah, I go back to my supposition that he couldn't have been a worse hero.

I've always been the kind of reader who liked an action packed book with a mandatory twist of romance added in. I have been on a "vampire" kick and enjoyed the first few books because of the interesting plot line. The others in this series were obviously filled with more romance than this one but the comparative lack of that in this book didn't actually bother me at all. Just give me a hero/heroine to believe in. Please. And then I'm happy. Is that too much to ask for?

To me, the unfolding plot lines were what made me continue on with this book...except I became more and more frustrated at how incompetent the brotherhood was starting to look as the book continued. Hey, the lessers were kicking butt and putting the brotherhood to shame. If this continues, the civilian vampires should start hoping that the lessers somehow develop a change of heart and decide to protect them, not destroy them; after all, the incompetence seen in this book by the saviors does not bode well for the race as a whole. Hopefully Ward starts to reinfuse some confidence in the brotherhood with her next book. Then again, Rehvenge isn't exactly a brother is he?

OK, so tptb took down my incomplete review because when I had posted it I was about 1/2 way through. I said I would be back and here I am.

To get to it - What I Liked
John, Qhinn, Blay, Rehvenge, Lassiter & the Return of a certain BD Brother

What I did not like
Phury & Cormia - Probably could have liked them more if Ms. Ward has spent more time on the development of their story. However they back-and-forth and back-and-forth and back... well you get my meaning over do I smoke, do I do H, do I take her as shellan do I leave her in the room next door, do I act as primale, do I ignore the medallion summons....BOOOORRRRRINNNG.

Cormia had a bit of a backbone but again no time spent on her so by the end when the two basically find their rather rushed HEA. I sort of stuck me like they just became parents to the chosen who were living in them in a ready-set-camp in the adirondacks.

Did not like NOT seeing the rest of the brothers. Butch, Vishous, Rage and even Wrath and Z made the earlier books sizzle and to relegate them to yelling at everyone to Shut the *&#%$$ up or worrying about Bella was again BBBOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRING. I did like Z's comment to to Phury to "Get of the cross someone else needs the wood" classic!

In any event. While Ms. Ward can write, I just felt like she was on auto-pilot on this one and positioning this book as Phury's story is not quite accurate. Also based on the furor burning up the web over the work book. I am going to stay far away from it. I figure 2009 is a new start for me and as much as I love books, I got to save a dollar here and there so I am going to wait for the next one and probably pick it up in the Fall after people have weighed in. If this is Ms. Wards foray into Urban Fantasy from Paranormal Roomance, she had best do a quick u-turn.

If you like romance books at all, you have to read the entire "Black Dagger Brotherhood" Series by JR Ward. This series is the "BEST". It comes with strong characters and a never before written back drop. I just reccommend to start with the first in the series and progress from there.

4 out of 5 stars Somewhat Disapointing   December 23, 2008
This is book six in J.R Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series. In my opinion it is the weakest of the series so far, simply because it's too much of everything. I would actually rank it at about 3 1/2 stars.

The Plot:

Warrior Phury has agreed to act as the Primale of his species-basically, his task is to sire future warriors like himself by mating with the chosen females. Cormia is to be his first mate of the lot. His role as Primale is complicated by the fact that he has romantic feelings for Cormia, and does not with to mate with anyone else.

The Best Parts:

What little romance there was was actually quite nice. Cormia and Phury fit well together. Phury is self-less and giving, and Cormia has a kind of quiet strength and inner-defiance.

Seeing Phury overcome his inner-demons was satisfying and emotional. It was also fairly realistic and un-sugarcoated. Once again Ward does not shy from even the toughest issues.

Probably the best parts, unfortunately, were those that centered around other characters. Old characters like Wrath, Zsadist, John Matthew, etc. continue to develop and interact. Theres a lot of action surrounding these characters as well, and it's very entertaining.

Why it Lost a Star:

Phury is an addict, and unfortunately addicts don't make very emotionally attractive heroes. He is lovable, yes, and as a reader you feel for him and want him to get better. But he spends most of the book feeding his addiction, and then recovering from it, and so we don't get to see much of him as a complete, loving, open person worthy of finding his soul-mate.

The core plot is not very appealing. Although the circumstance of Phury as Primale initially seems like an intriguing obstacle, in fact it just becomes one more ridiculous issue for the couple to overcome. There is too much conflict, and it becomes difficult to see why and how the couple fell in love.

Overall, while it may be the least exciting of the series, this book still stands well above the curve in it's genre. It manages to deliver action and mystery, fun and sexy characters, and a little taste of romance.

2 out of 5 stars Kinda disappointed   December 22, 2008

I want to start off saying i am a huge BDB fan. I love these books. I have to say i was disappointed in this book. Phury is so messed up in this book. I wanted him to find the love of his life like the other brothers have, and he did at the end but it was so hard for him. And I thought this was to be his book but it was more about John Matthew and his friends and the Lessors then about Phury. It was like Phury was the subplot in his own book. Also it was not a romance book it was darker then the other books. Even darker then Z's book (which i loved) so darker doesn't mean bad to me but this was different. I was enjoying the book at the end of the story, but if you want any kind of heat or romance it won't be this book. I just hope when book 7 comes out JR Ward will go back to what made her series so good.
