Great thing to share with your children! June 1, 2008 I started by buying these for my parents to fill out for me. I loved reading their responses. I learned many things about my parents that I didn't know before. It also sparked conversations with them about additional stories.
Now that I have children, I'm buying these books for me and (the grandparent ones) for my parents to fill out for them. And buying them as gifts for new parents.
Regarding the comments that there isn't a lot of room to write...The pages are small, but there are only a few pages that you would get that lengthy on your stories. You can always attach in an additional sheet of paper to continue your story.
I do not like the size of these books they are tiny March 1, 2008 I do not like the size or design of these books. They are extremely small and are not made of a material that will stand up to years of wear and tear.
A gift that will last forever January 14, 2008 I gave this book to my father for Christmas of 2000. He was terminally ill with ALS, and could no longer use his arms (or write for that matter). We worked on this together, and that was the best gift of all. I'd ask him the questions, and he'd answer. I'd simply record his answers for him. He died in January 2002. I recently found the book, and found it to be a treasure. Reading it brought back memories of our conversations, and the time we spent together.
Thank You Kathleen!
Great questions, but not enough space to answer them! :( June 10, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is set up such that every day of the year has its own question. This is great to keep dads on task and filling out the pages in a timely manner. Many of the pages are quite thought-provoking and encourage story-sharing. However, the space is MUCH too limited to adequately do so. For example, it is difficult to relate a childhood story in a space the size of an index card. And some of that space is taken up by the question! Couple that with someone who doesn't have TEENY TINY handwriting...and you have a problem. The questions are great, but there should be adequate room for an answer! For example, my father quickly ran out of room on "tell about a practical joke or prank you played on someone" but then there was an entire page for "what was your day and date of birth"?? That just makes no sense. Also, be warned that the font of the questions can be hard to read (as it is cursive and squished together). This is difficult for people with vision problems and for those whose primary language is not English. If you can get past that (and maybe supplement some of your own blank pages), this is a fantastic keepsake. It causes Dad to fondly look back on his life and remember events long past. Overall review: It is a great way to share memories...but the logistics of this book need serious improvement.
Best Gift I ever bought October 25, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this book for my Dad about 5 years ago. He passed away on Oct. 10th and there is nothing more valuable that he could have left me. You think you know a lot about your parents, but let me tell you, there are many surprises - all of which made me smile. Really an amazing little book.
